Advanced orthopedic evaluation in a show jumping horse prior to international purchase
During a pre-purchase examination of a show jumping horse intended for international competition, a complete clinical and orthopedic assessment was performed with the objective of identifying not only overt pathology, but also subtle risk factors that could compromise future performance and long-term athletic durability.
Although the horse did not present with overt clinical lameness at the time of examination, a detailed orthopedic evaluation combined with a critical interpretation of diagnostic imaging revealed subtle findings of biomechanical relevance. When considered in isolation, these findings could be interpreted as low-impact; however, when analyzed in the context of the intended discipline, expected competitive level and projected training load, their clinical significance changed substantially.
The assessment did not focus on a simple “fit or not fit” outcome, but rather on a structured orthopedic risk evaluation, allowing the buyer to understand how these findings could influence future performance, management strategies and career longevity.
This approach enabled the international buyer to make an informed decision based on medical evidence, athletic projection and risk management, aligned with both sporting objectives and investment strategy.
