Infiltrations in the Sacroiliac Joint

The sacroiliac joint, which connects the spine to the pelvis, can be a source of pain and dysfunction in show jumping horses due to the repetitive stress and impact of competitions and training

Indications

  • Chronic Pain: It can be used in horses with chronic pain in the lumbar and pelvic region.
  • Inflammation and Stiffness: Used to reduce inflammation and improve mobility.
  • Overload Injuries: In cases of overload injuries due to frequent and demanding jumps.

Procedure

  • Diagnosis: A diagnosis is made through clinical examinations and sometimes imaging techniques such as ultrasound or x-ray.
  • Infiltration: A long needle guided by ultrasound or x-ray is used to inject anti-inflammatory medications (such as corticosteroids) and local anesthetics directly into the joint.

Effects

  • Pain Reduction: Medications reduce inflammation and pain, allowing the horse to move more easily.
  • Improved Function: May improve joint function and, therefore, the horse’s performance.
