Pastern Dermatitis – Thrush

It is a common condition beginning as a mild dermatitis of the pastern level, as you will find advancing pathology skin irritation, heat, pain and in some cases can cause lameness.

It occurs in horses outdoors or horses who spend a lot of time in a box with excessive heat, with a wet and dirty bed. En SERVEQ have observed poor hygiene of the pastern as well as poor hygiene such protectors favor the occurrence of this disease.

In many cases it is a joint disease caused by fungi and bacteria. It is important for early detection of this disease as in Figure 1 and 2 where you can only see a mild dermatitis. As this disease progresses we get to see what figure 3 and 4 though not usual. By this I do emphases on the importance of routine observation of horses for early detection of these diseases, mainly in winter and spring.

Prevention and treatment; remove the hair in the affected area, disinfect and apply ointments specific for this problem . Avoiding risk factors for this condition such as dirt and moisture ….
