Retraction of the Flexor Tendons

The causes of tendon retraction may be due to hereditary factors, malformations of the fetus in utero, nutritional deficiencies of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin D, etc.

Clinical cases:
Case 1: Filly twenty months old, note the fetlock moved forward in the left limb due to retraction of the digital flexor tendon surface.
1
Case 2: Colt 15 months old with retraction of the deep digital flexor tendon where the elevation of the heel on the right foot is observed.
2
In practice when presented with cases of newborns with this problem a tendon stretch with growth expected and usually does not require treatment foals.
Different is whether these foals with few days of life do not support the foot completely on the ground, the fetlock and pastern are displaced forward and the animal has difficulty to support the foot, it would be to call your vet to act as soon as possible .
And avoid that happening as in these two cases where it acted properly in no time, leaving one treatment option is surgical, reserved for the sporting life prognosis due to the advanced age of these horses.
